National Variety Trials - NVT Online
Site Audit Sheet

The basic observations that indicate the goodness of a trial and its suitability to be included in the information for that year. Site Audit Sheets can be filled in by growers, advisers and others visiting trial sites. They can be filled in online or using the PDF version and returned by post or email (info@nvtonline.com.au).

The site audit is to assess trial accessibility, management operations and anything that may impact on the final results.

Select a value for each criteria:
5 = very good, 4 good, 3 average, 2 poor, 1 = very poor, 0=Not applicable

Choice of Site

GPS Coordinates supplied *

Site Location *
Inadequate could be too far from the access road, beyond sand dunes accessible only by 4 wheel drives, beyond creeks or water prone areas impassable in a wet winter/spring, etc

Comments

Site Selection *
Inadequate could be too close to trees, sown across obvious headlands, sown across gateway/vehicle access tracks, uneven topography which may cause variation across the trial, etc.

Sowing

Timing *
Inadequate could be much later (> 2 weeks) than the farmer bulk crop surrounding the trial, within reason. The farmer may have dry sown and an adequately moist seedbed may not occur until later, as in some areas in 2004.
5 4 3 2 1 0
Sowing Depth *
Inadequate could be seed sown too deep causing slow emergence, reduced vigor, etc or too shallow giving uneven emergence due to surface drying. Obviously, sowing depth will be governed by crop type.
5 4 3 2 1 0
Accuracy of Driving *
Inadequate would be when the inter plot distance is markedly variable, eg plots get very close together and may cause management or harvest issues. This will also cause variation in competition between plots. Slight wavering of mostly parallel sown plots is adequate, although not ideal.

Comments
Tripping *
Is most of the seed in the plot or is there excessive carry over into the headland or into the next plot. Incorrect tripping can be corrected with plot trimming but plot length is compromised.

Comments
Emergence *
Indicate if the plant populations are adequate or if there is undue variability in the emergence of plants across the plots. This variability will have a potential influence on the yield of the plots.

Management

White peg in plot one of each trial *
Pest Management *
Effect of pests on the establishment and or variability within a trial – earth mites, false wireworm, hares, grazing mammals, slugs.

Comments
Weed Control *
Inadequate would be obvious poor weed management, uneven distribution of weeds, presence of few but large weeds obviously influencing plot growth (capeweed, marsh mallow, thistles, etc). The presence of few ineffective weeds should not be assessed too harshly.

Comments
Crop Health *
Inadequate could be poor growth compared to farmer bulk crop surrounding the trial, which may be crop colour, height, vigor generally, etc.
5 4 3 2 1 0
Comments
Plot Trimming *
Either slashed or sprayed; this may or may not have occurred

Inadequate would be uneven ends (flattened, not cut), not straight paths (uneven plot lengths), spray drift into plots.
